For my first cooking endeavour, I decided to pick something I thought would be relatively easy. On the app Tik Tok I found a recipe done by the account @collegechefron in which he cooks “baked egg on toast”. In the video he claims this will take 6 minutes of cooking time and cost less than $1. I would agree that this is a cheap meal, as all it requires is an egg, a piece of bread, cheese, and any spices you desire. Although I just watched the video to make the recipe, it can be written as followed:

Baked Egg On Toast

Ingredients:

  • 1 piece of bread
  • 1 egg
  • handful of grated cheese
  • pinch of salt and pepper

Procedure:

  1. Using a fork, press down the centre of the bread to create room for an egg
  2. crack egg into middle of bread
  3. sprinkle cheese and seasonings around bread
  4. using an air fryer, bake at 360 degrees for 6 minutes

I personally did not have an air fryer, but the video stated you could also use an oven, so I decided to use my toaster oven. After 6 minutes, I noticed the egg was still completely raw and the cheese had barely even melted. I put it in for another 2 minutes and the changes were still very minimal. I decided to set the toaster oven to broil for 3 minutes. I noticed the bread and cheese start to cook, but the egg still seemed quite raw. I put it on the toast setting for 2 more minutes and then decided to take it out. I was a bit frustrated and confused as to why the egg did not cook in the time it was supposed to. I went back to the video and noticed many people commented on how their egg was also basically raw. My toast ended up a bit burnt and it got stuck to the bottom of the tray I was using.

Overall, the end product tasted okay, but I believe cooking a fried egg and putting it on a piece of toast would take the same amount of time and be a lot better. The way I made it did require less dishes, which I am happy about given I did not want to spend a ton of time doing dishes, but I don’t know that it is worth it. Next time I will definitely be reading the comments on videos to learn tips from others. I would rate this experience a 4/10.
