In this weeks class, we focused on the topic of visuals and why it is important to learning. We were given the prompt: “People can learn more deeply from words and pictures than from words alone”, and were asked whether we agreed or disagreed. I, along with most of the class, agreed with this statement. It is quite often that material can be confusing when presented with just words, but adding a photo can allow for clarity. Examples of this could be diagrams, pyramids, chains, tables, etc. This is why it is so important as teachers that we know how to create and use images within our lessons. In the class we discussed some tools we can use to do this. We discussed simple things such as how to screenshot, but also some different platforms we can use to create graphics. One that we went into detail about was google slides. I have used google slides for many school projects and feel okay about using it, but in class we learned about all the tools available to us in google slides. I learnt that under “design” you can create pyramids, tables, cycles, and more. You can also do something as simple as taking a labeled diagram and cover up sections you want students to answer questions about. I do not feel too confident with it all yet, but I feel like I am making progress and will be practicing how to use all the different features google slides provides. I have attached an image I created for my EPHE 310 class of students performing a game using google slides, in which I used some of the strategies discussed in class. I am looking forward to exploring more technology and how I can use it to enhance my teaching!
