For this weeks cooking task, I decided to challenge myself and make something without following a recipe. While at my friend’s house, we decided to make a breakfast hash for brunch using ingredients we found in the house. We decided to use eggs, potatoes, turkey bacon, and mushrooms. We started by making the potatoes, as we knew this would take the longest. We put a bag of potatoes into salted boiling water and cooked until they were soft. While that was cooking, we chopped up the mushrooms and turkey bacon into small bits. We put some oil in a hot pan and cooked the turkey bacon and mushrooms together until they were browned. After this, we strained the potatoes and cut them up into smaller bits. We added the potatoes into the pan and cooked them until they got a bit crispy. The potatoes did not get as crispy as we hoped, so next time we would probably try to cook the potatoes separately to get them more crisp. We then reduced the heat and poured in the egg mixture, which was 4 eggs seasoned with salt and pepper. The eggs cooked quickly so we made sure to be constantly stirring with a spatula. Once the eggs looked cooked, it was ready to serve!
The end product ended up being really tasty. I think this is a dish that is simple to make and very versatile. There are so many options of toppings you could add to this hash. Next time, I think I would like to try adding spinach and onion. As stated before, I think it could have been made better if we were able to make the potatoes crispier, but the soft potatoes tasted good as well. I decided to top mine with ketchup, while my friend used sriracha. This again shows how versatile you can make a hash, which is why I think it is a great breakfast for everyone. I think it would have benefited from some more spices, however I do not have much knowledge on spices and do not know which would have been good to add. I have a seasoning I like to use on potatoes from Hy’s Steakhouse that I think I would try next time. Overall I would rate this dish a 9/10!
